Twitch viewership is continuing to grow by leaps and bounds. In fact, last January its viewership was better than of NBC and CNN. While Twitch viewership still lagged behind ESPN, the gap is shrinking as ESPN struggled to maintain viewers and Twitch grows.
As more and more esports are signing exclusive deals on different platforms, it begs the question of how important is actually is for esports to get on mainstream TV. Fewer and fewer millennials are getting cable, instead opting for a good internet package and services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, and the like.
So could esports survive and come into the mainstream consciousness of the world without TV? Who would actually benefit more from the relationship? In twenty years, what is TV even going to look like?
