Japan’s Prime Minister Pushing for Esports Tournaments

In an effort to have the country prepared for a possible esports inclusion in the Olympics, the Prime Minister’s party has pushed to help an effort in allowing licenses for esports tournaments in Japan. Working around Japan’s archaic law barring gambling events, the first tournament to use these licenses will be held on February 9th. While esports will not be a medal event in Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic Games, the city government and the Japan Olympic committee have already signed off on allowing major tournaments to be run in the lead-up to the event.
