South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission handed down nearly $1 million in fines, mostly at the expense of Nexon Korea over misrepresenting the odds on Loot Boxes. NetMarble and NextFloor Games were also fined in lesser amounts.
The fines came as a result of the companies claiming random distribution, despite their rarer items being as low as a .5 percent drop rate. The fines may not be for a ton of money compared to what loot boxes have been shown to make. However, they are seen as largely symbolic, marking the largest penalties ever handed down under the Korean electronic commerce act.
