Supreme Court Lifts Federal Ban on Sports Gambling

The Supreme Court voted by a margin of 6-3 to lift the federal ban on sports gambling. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act had been in place since 1992 and made it illegal to unlawful to authorize or offer sports gambling. Nevada was exempted from the law, and Montana, Delaware, and Oregon’s sports lotteries were also exempt. Individual states now have the option to allow sports gambling, with multiple states announcing their intent to do so.

The day the ban was lifted, DraftKings announced their intent to allow sports gambling on their app. Fantasy esports was the fastest growing segment of DraftKing last year. Esports gambling has become a major economic force with billions of dollars being wagered annually worldwide. However, it somewhat lagged behind in the United States.
